Start here: Locally Uncensored without any tech knowledge

You do not need a command line, a terminal, Python or GitHub to use Locally Uncensored. This page takes you from the download to your first answer with clicks only, on Windows, Mac and Linux. Written for version 3.0.6.

What you need

1. Download the right file

1 Open the download page

Click "Download" at the top of this site. It opens the official Releases page on GitHub. You do not need a GitHub account to download. Scroll down to the list called "Assets".

2 Pick the one file for your computer
Your computerThe file that ends in
Windows_x64-setup.exe
Mac with an Apple chip.dmg
Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian.deb
Fedora, openSUSE.rpm
Any other Linux.AppImage

Ignore the other files (for example the ones called "Source code"). You need exactly one. Download only from that Releases page; the button on this site leads there.

2. Install it

Windows

1 Double-click the file you downloaded

You find it in your Downloads folder. Windows probably shows a blue box, "Windows protected your PC". This appears because the installer does not carry a paid Microsoft signature yet, not because something was found in it. Click "More info", check that the file name is the one you downloaded from the official Releases page, then click "Run anyway". If you are unsure, read what the security warnings mean first.

2 Click through the installer

Choose a language, then "current user only" (needs no administrator password) or all users. When it is done, the app starts, and you find "Locally Uncensored" on the desktop and in the Start menu.

Mac

1 Open the .dmg and drag LU into Applications

Double-click the downloaded .dmg. A window opens; drag the app onto the Applications folder in that window. Then open it from Applications or Launchpad. The .dmg is signed and notarized. The Mac build is for Apple Silicon and is in beta.

Linux

1 .deb or .rpm: open it with your software center

Double-click the file, or right-click it and choose to open it with your software center (Ubuntu's "App Center", Fedora's "Software", or what your system calls it), then click "Install". Afterwards "Locally Uncensored" is in your application menu.

2 .AppImage: allow it to run, then double-click

Right-click the file, choose "Properties", and on the "Permissions" tab tick "Allow executing file as program" (the exact words differ a little between desktops). Then double-click it. If nothing happens at all, your system is missing a small package; the Linux part of the install chapter names it.

3. The setup wizard

The first start opens a small setup window. It asks a few things; for each one the safe answer is below. You can run it again later from Settings, General, "Re-run onboarding".

1 "Get Started"

The welcome screen says the app works right away with no extra software to install. Click "Get Started".

2 Engine: keep "LU Engine"

The app looks for other AI programs for a few seconds. Then it says "Ready to chat" with "LU Engine" already selected. That is the right choice: it is built in and needs nothing else. Click "Continue". Ignore "Use another engine" unless you already use one of those programs.

3 Image and video: skip it for now

This step installs ComfyUI, the program behind images and video. It is a big download. You do not need it for chatting, so click "Skip for now". The app offers it again the first time you open the Create tab. On a Mac this step does not apply, because the Mac makes images without ComfyUI.

4 Pick a starter model

A model is the "brain" the app runs. The wizard shows a starter model and marks the one that suits your computer with "Recommended". Click that card so it shows a tick, then click "Install 1 model". The download is several gigabytes; leave the window open until it is finished. If a grey line says the model may not fully fit your graphics card, it still works, just slower.

5 Documents: optional

The last step offers a small extra model that lets the app read PDFs and Word files you drop into a chat. It is small; install it if you want that, or skip it.

4. Your first message

1 Type and press Enter

The main window opens on Chat. Type a question into the box at the bottom and press Enter. The first answer can take a few seconds while the model loads; after that it is quicker. Everything you type stays on your computer.

2 Start a new chat

The menu button at the top left opens the side panel with your chats and "New Chat". Each chat is kept until you delete it.

No good graphics card? Use LU Cloud

LU Cloud runs the models on our servers instead of your computer, so it works on any laptop. It needs an account and credits; the plans are on the pricing page. In the app, click the "Cloud" switch at the top right and sign in. Switch it off again to go back to your own computer. What you send in Cloud mode leaves your machine; the LU Cloud chapter explains what that means.

What to try next

Words you will meet

WordMeaning
ModelThe file that does the thinking. Bigger models know more and need more memory.
7B, 9B, 70BThe size of a model, in billions of parameters. 7B to 9B runs on most gaming graphics cards.
VRAMThe memory on your graphics card. It decides which models run fast.
LU EngineThe program inside the app that runs models on your computer.
ComfyUIThe program the app installs for images and video on Windows and Linux.
Local / CloudLocal runs on your computer, free and private. Cloud runs on LU's servers, costs credits, needs no graphics card.

When something goes wrong

The antivirus deleted or blocked the file. Do not switch your antivirus off. Leave the file in quarantine and read what the warnings mean.

The answers are very slow. The model is too big for your graphics card. Under Models in the top bar pick a smaller one marked green, or use LU Cloud.

The model download stopped. Check your internet connection and free disk space, then open Models in the top bar and start the download again.

I clicked the wrong thing in the wizard. Settings, General, "Re-run onboarding" starts it again.

Nothing helps. Ask in the Discord. Say which computer you have, which version of the app, and attach the log file: Settings, General, Troubleshoot, "Open folder", and today's file in there.
